Interview with PoolFighters Captain Kevin (Ody_Sseus)
A: Thanks; it was ok except for my brother getting horribly drunk and embarrasing himself in front of our relatives. How was yours?
Q: Boring as all hell. Anyways, what were you expecting going into the season?
A: From the outset, I expected it to be very tough, especially since most of our so-called big name players had left and gone to other leagues such as DP. But from the beginning I was determined to get some sort of team together if only to save the name of PF.
Q: When Corey wanted to play for PF, after last season, were you hesitant at all to let him?
A: Yes; I thought it would be good to keep Corey on side, because despite his behaviour, he had been a decent player. However, at the start of the season I had a lot of problems with Corey to the extent that he had to take an hiatus from poolfighters. At one point, I really wasn't sure that it would benefit us by his being on the team. But, he came back with a much better attitude (perhaps when he realised that we were winning most of our matches with regular players like me, Danny, Kaz, carbon, Mo, etc.) and by the time of the playoffs, he gave us very little hassle. He turned up, usually won his game, and cheered on the rest of the team: something that I totally wouldn't have expected from Corey earlier in the season.
Q: How difficult was it to adapt to the changes made this season? With the different Playoff format, the rules changing every other week, did you guys ever have any problems throughout the season?
A: We had constant problems throughout the season: the schedule! grrrrrfffffff. For some reason, I had to reschedule almost every match to 6pm EST, because most of our players - including Danny and myself - are from Europe. I couldn't understand why, after explaining that we couldn't play after 6pm, we couldn't just be scheduled in for that time instead of being scheduled in for ridiculous times like 9pm (2/3am European time) and having to contact each of our opponents' captains to reschedule: they rescheduled anyway.
Q: Who was your top player, in your opinion, through the season?
A: Throughout the season, I'd say Danny. I'm so glad he decided to stay this season. If he hadn't, I probably would have quit. He's a good player (though he doesn't play as much), but more than that, he is a really helpful person to have on the team: he never gave me any hassle, and he always helped when working out match tactics - who's hot and who's just shit on the opponent's team etc. It's a hard question, because for pure playing ability, I'd say Rev - he played amazingly well in the play offs and the World Series.
Q: You get to the Playoffs, you're the #1 team in the Conference, how different was Captaining the Playoff games?
A: It was quite different, because I had to be realistic about who I could let play: I'd like to give all the regular players a game - as was the case earlier in the season - but it just wasn't feasible when we were up against much more difficult teams where most of the players were of a pretty high standard. Corey and Rev proved to be much more useful at that part of the season.
Q: What was the scariest part of the Playoffs?
A: Not knowing whether my key players would turn up. I really had to twist a few arms to get players to continue to turn up on time. But to their credit, Rev and Corey showed much more commitment at the end of the season.
Q: 2 more... First off, where does this PF team rank among other WS winners?
A: You could say that this season the standard in MLP is not as high as previous seasons, however, a lot of the well known and well thought of players are still around - Lulu, Coma, and a handful of players from DP, PL and PO. PL and DP, for example, have a lot of these players playing for them. I wouldn't be so blind to say that this season PF had 7 players who were a match for either of those teams mentioned on an individual basis, however, I think even though this season we had arguably less self-assuredly skillful players than, say, last season when we had Lu, Krunal, Adnan, Cole, we worked much better as a team. I think this season, PF was a much stronger team than in any of the previous seasons (in which I was involved) - I certainly placed a much greater emphasis on tactics and cheating (we had Soph playing on multiple id's at one point ). We won our conference with a win record of 13-2 (we lost two very stupid matches 3-4), and we beat PO 4-2 (should have been 4-1 if not for Mo forgetting taskmanager) 4-1 in WS. In short, I think we worked hard enough to be counted as a team able to beat any other team from any other season. Some might scoff at that, but it's clear from everyone's predictions that PF wouldn't even make the playoffs that nobody foresaw us winning the WS (except me, of course - I knew we'd win even if I had to hack the mlp website and post pf as winners ;) )
Q: Who is your World Series MVP, and your Season MVP?
A: I think pool_king_luis. oh shit...I wasn't supposed to mention that he was playing for pf under miss_kazzie... I think, probably rev for WS MVP. He's easily one of the best players ever to play for PF. He's consistently good; I'd put him up against any of the "godly" players of Yahoo. For season MVP, Danny.
Q: Thanks for the interview, I know it was difficult And congrats on a great season, and easily the best season PF has ever had.
A: Cheers, Cubby.
So there you have it, PF's first ever Captain to win a World Series, they deserve every bit of credit they could get, because it was a league effort, nobody switching over to PF as a glory hunter, or very few at least. You had to know it would be the case with the increased # of games required. Great job Kevin, great job PF, and best of luck next season.
